 BBC YOUNG MUSICIAN FINALIST 2016

18-year-old saxophonist Jess Gillam from Ulverston, Cumbria, began playing saxophone aged seven. In 2016, Jess made history as the first-ever saxophonist to win the Woodwind Final of the BBC Young Musician Competition. She then reached the Grand Final, performing John Nyman’s concerto Where the Bee Dances with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at London’s Barbican Hall to critical acclaim.

This season Jess makes her BBC Proms debut at the Royal Albert Hall, where she performs as soloist with both the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Jess will be accompanied at the Linlithgow concert by Jonathan Fisher, Piano.

“A girl every viewer – with or without classical music knowledge – would take to their hearts… Down to earth, funny and cool… What was not to like?” – Gramophone
