Music for a summer afternoon played by a quintet of wind instrument students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
THE AUTUMN QUINTET
The Autumn Quintet is a relatively newly established Wind Quintet formed of students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Founded in September 2025, we are passionate about delivering high quality chamber music. Throughout our group’s first year we have explored a variety of exciting repertoire, centred around established classics, while incorporating some contemporary works and works by underrepresented composers.
In March, we were honoured to be selected to perform as finalists in the prestigious RCS Governor’s Recital Prize for Chamber Music. We have also appeared in several other concerts, including the annual RCS ‘Double Reed Concert’ and the fundraising concert for the University of Glasgow’s Kelvin Symphony Orchestra.

The Performers
Cody Macdonald is a flautist from Port Glasgow. He started playing the flute in 2021 and is now studying flute and piccolo at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland under the tutelage of Ruth Morely, Helen Brew, and Janet Richardson.
Esther Kallow is an oboist from Falkirk. In 2021 she began her studies at the junior department of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with Stephen West. Esther was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain in 2024 and performed with the orchestra in concert venues around Great Britian including the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. She is currently studying oboe at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Maria Ludkin-Finnie is a Scottish clarinettist, going into her third year at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Originally from Ayr, Maria studied clarinet with Tom Hay before spending a year at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Junior Department. Now, she studies clarinet with John Cushing, and Eb clarinet with Josef Pacewicz. As well as a long-standing interest in chamber music, Maria also loves orchestral playing and is a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and Edinburgh Youth Orchestra.
Ada Biernacka is the French Horn player of the quintet. She’s from a small Polish town and moved to the UK when she was 16 to study French Horn performance at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester and now she studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Ada enjoys playing in orchestras and ensembles, and recently got the principal chair of the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland.
Freya Edington is a bassoonist from Perth currently studying her MMus at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Throughout her undergraduate and now postgraduate studies she has freelanced with several orchestras, such as Perth Symphony Orchestra and Dundee Symphony Orchestra, and performed La Boheme with Fife Opera in 2025. She also performs with her three chamber ensembles, in both traditional classical and community settings. Outside of performing, Freya works as a teacher and workshop leader, both in schools and as part of the NYOS Music Leaders Programme. The Quintet is grateful to her for standing in at this event for their regular bassoonist, Bethan Chesire.
