Programme:

Dvořák: Symphony No. 7 in D minor

Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 3 in A minor, ‘Scottish’

Rossini: William Tell

Writing about his Symphony No.3, composed following a visit to Scotland, Mendelssohn wrote: “We went, in deep twilight, to the palace where Queen Mary lived and loved … Everything around is broken and mouldering and the bright sky shines in. I believe I found the beginning of my Scotch[sic] Symphony there today.” [July 30th 1829]. Mendelssohn loved Scotland and this symphony is surely one his most expressive and poetic works.

(The "palace" referred to is Holyrood, not Linlithgow!)

As if one well-loved symphony is not enough, we also offer Dvořák’s seventh – a dramatic work certainly, but brim full of those characteristically warm-hearted melodies that only he could pen.

We bring our concert to a rousing conclusion indeed with Rossini’s “William Tell” Overture – guaranteed to send you out into the January night with yet more themes buzzing around in the head – whatever the weather!

Hailed for their 'impressive playing' by BBC Music Magazine, they have recently released Carl Maria von Weber's complete piano duets on an original Viennese fortepiano for Deux-Elles, and have previously recorded Mozart’s complete sonatas for keyboard duet on period instruments over two discs for Resonus Classics. They have each been awarded Associateship of the Royal Academy of Music in recognition of their ‘significant contribution’ thus far to the music profession, and have just released Tournament for Twenty Fingers featuring works by British composers from the twentieth century on BIS Records: the disc has received a 5-star review on BBC Music Magazine and has been chosen by Scala Radio as Album of the Weekend.

Broen Ensemble

We have joined with several other Scottish music societies in sponsoring a concert by the Broen Ensemble, a group of young Scottish musicians (and Tunnell Trust Prize-winners) who were to have been part of this year’s programme.

The concert, for string septet, features Tchaikovsky’s “Souvenir of Florence” and “Metamorphosen”, by Richard Strauss.

The on-line recording is available exclusively to these music societies, including Linlithgow Arts Guild, for the next 3 months, after which it will be promoted more widely by the performers while remaining open to our members for the rest of 2021. We are giving access to members and recent former members of Linlithgow Arts Guild. We will also make this available to any new members who join during this period.

Consort Singers

Tickets: Full - £14, Under 26 - £6

The GESUALDO SIX is a vocal consort comprised of some of the UK’s finest young consort singers, directed by Owain Park. Formed in March 2014 for a performance of Gesualdo’s Tenebrae Responsories for Maundy Thursday in the chapel of Trinity College, Cambridge, the group went on to give over sixty performances around the United Kingdom and abroad in its first three years. Over this time, The Gesualdo Six further developed a passion for ensemble singing that for many of them stemmed from formative years as choristers in churches and cathedrals around the country.

The group will present a wonderfully varied programme of choral music ranging from the atmospheric and spiritual to the light hearted and tuneful. They travel from the renaissance to the present day and from sacred to secular with mastery. This concert features works from their debut album, English Motets, with highlights by William Byrd and Thomas Tallis, alongside pieces by Arvo Pärt and Eric Whitacre. This promises to be an evening to remember.
